Official Patient Dietary Instruction (NLM MedlinePlus)

If you are being treated for Wilson's disease your doctor will probably recommend a special diet for you that is low in copper. This diet avoids cereals and dietary supplements that are enriched with copper, chocolate, nuts, shellfish, mushrooms, liver, molasses, broccoli, and other high copper containing foods. Your doctor may also recommend that you drink distilled or demineralized water, instead of regular tap water. Be sure to follow all dietary recommendations made by your doctor. If you are being treated for cystinuria your doctor may recommend a special diet for you that is low in methionine (a type of protein). However if you are a child or if you are pregnant your doctor may not recommend this diet. Your doctor will also probably recommend that you drink enough liquids. If you are being treated for rheumatoid arthritis, continue your normal diet unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

HIGH

Green Tea, Black Tea & Matcha (Tannins & OATP Inhibitors)

NutriDive Kitchen Food Biochemical Ontology & openFDA
Bioactive Compound:Polyphenolic Tannins & Catechins (EGCG)
Biological Target:Ionic Iron Transporters & OATP1A2 / OATP2B1
Clinical Mechanism:

Tannins form insoluble macromolecular iron-tannate precipitates, dropping non-heme iron absorption by up to 80%. Catechins additionally inhibit intestinal OATP uptake transporters, drastically reducing bioavailability of beta-blockers (atenolol) and allergy medications (fexofenadine).

Patient Actionable Rule:Do not take oral iron supplements with tea; drink tea between meals at least 2 hours apart. If taking fexofenadine or nadolol, avoid green tea within 4 hours.
HIGH

Dairy Milk, Yogurt & Calcium-Enriched Foods

NutriDive Kitchen Food Biochemical Ontology & openFDA
Bioactive Compound:Ionic Calcium (Ca2+) & Casein Micelles
Biological Target:Intestinal Chelation & Luminal Complexation
Clinical Mechanism:

Divalent calcium binds fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin) and tetracycline (doxycycline) antibiotics into unabsorbable ring complexes, reducing systemic antibacterial coverage by up to 90% and causing therapy failure.

Patient Actionable Rule:Separate all dairy ingestion from oral antibiotics, bisphosphonates, and thyroid medications by at least 2 to 4 hours.
